Law Enforcement and Holiday Travel Safety: What Officers Need to Know

The holiday season reliably increases demands on law enforcement across virtually every agency type. Larger crowds at public gatherings, elevated alcohol consumption, heightened emotional states around travel and family situations, and an increased number of large-venue events combine to create a period where officer workload and exposure to potential incidents are both higher than average.

Crowd Density and Event Security

Large holiday events, including New Year gatherings, major shopping periods, and public celebrations, concentrate large numbers of people in spaces not always designed for crowd management. Officers assigned to these events need crowd control gear appropriate to the scale of the gathering, even when the event is expected to be peaceful. Situations that escalate at large events can do so quickly, and having riot-capable equipment staged and accessible is different from having it back at the station.

The Patrol suit is well-suited for event security assignments where the primary requirement is presence and crowd management capability without the full deployment footprint of a riot formation. Police Chief Magazine has documented event security best practices that include pre-staged riot capability even for events with low escalation probability.

Mounted Unit Deployment at Events

Mounted units provide crowd management capability and visible presence that is particularly effective at large public gatherings. Officers in mounted positions during holiday events should be equipped with gear appropriate to crowd interaction at elevated risk. The mounted rider suit provides the upper body and arm protection most relevant to the elevated-position threat profile during crowd operations.

Hydration and Extended Operations

Holiday event assignments frequently involve extended periods of outdoor operation in variable weather. Officers who are cold but still physically active face different hydration challenges than those in summer heat, but the underlying dehydration risk is still present. Building hydration practices into all extended-operation protocols, regardless of season, maintains officer performance over the course of a long shift.
