Officer Safety

The Crucial Role of Riot Gear Training

A riot suit that officers have worn twice performs differently than the same suit worn through a season of training. The gear is identical. The officer is not. Departments that treat protective equipment as a purchase rather than a training program get equipment-shaped results: gear that stays in the bag, slows the response, or gets worn wrong under stress.

Donning Drills

Donning speed is a trainable skill with a measurable standard. Run timed drills until every officer can gear up without conscious attention to the sequence, then run them again quarterly so the skill does not decay. The Enforcer is designed for self-dressing specifically so these drills do not require pairing officers, and the Arsenal kit's fixed component order exists to make the sequence automatic. A team that dons in three minutes instead of eight changes what command can do with the first fifteen minutes of an incident.

Formation Work in Full Kit

Line formations, shield walls, arrest team extractions, and baton work all feel different in panels and a helmet than they do in a polo shirt. Peripheral vision changes behind a face shield. Verbal commands are harder to hear. Footwork changes with shin guards on. The International Association of Chiefs of Police crowd management guidance emphasizes rehearsed, disciplined formations, and that discipline only exists if the rehearsals happen in the same equipment officers will deploy in. Train in full kit, every time.

Heat Acclimatization

Protective gear traps heat, and heat degrades judgment and reaction time well before it becomes a medical event. Officers who train in kit through progressively longer sessions build genuine physiological tolerance, and they learn their own warning signs in a controlled setting instead of on a line. Build hydration into every training block, and read our guides on heat stroke risk and integrated suit hydration for the operational side.
